.Vialka : Curiosities Of Popular Customs (self-released).
Vialka don't talk about folk tales, they don't even tell them:
they play them, they live them. The magic lies in their colourful
structuring, their drum/guiatr/vocals dialogues, arguments ("Only
the Wrong Survive" being a good example), agrrements. Listening
to the record is a bit like when we went to see Sabot live for the
first time: Hilary Binder, the drummer said "this is the story
of a rabit" and there it was, running on the snare, hitting
the cymbals, flying thru the breaks.it could have been anything,
and it could not. The pictures in the head, the power of the performer,
you know... Vialka add ocals and/or screams and whispers when needed,
when wanted, for the tales, for the pictures in the head, for the
goose bumps. They run thru the Balkans, Fly thru the Caucasus, across
Romania, Britany and forgotten villages with strong characters....
gypsies, independent: everywhere and nowhere. They tell all the
stories. They tell theirs. They tell stories forgotten, remembered,
invented, as simple geniuses of musiChumanity. They are the unleased
popular punkers of the localS, the untied personalS: it's unique
and speak to all (well, those who are ready to listen, at least).

.Lampshade : Because Trees Can Fly (Glitterhouse).
Lampshade is a fragile, mùm-influenced, Björk-enhanced
swedish pop exploding in rotating riffs and loud drums. The latter
preventing the whole work from being too polite/polished and adding
an interesting schizophrenic feeling to Rebecca Maria soft vocals.
I am actually aware that this description might seem slightly vague
and undefined. My problem is that I do recognize the quality of
the band and undertsand why the critics are almost unanimous in
acclaming the band for their pop talent. But how can I put it...hum...
"I am not a fan" and the problemis that i am having one
explaining why. I can talk about what I like, though: the throat.tightening
ending of "As I left the Room", the instrumental explosion
and male/female vocals of "Adorable Void". However, I
don't seem to be able to get the whole thing fully. Their art is
meticulous, concentrate, but it does not turn my guts out, and I
end up finiding the record predictable, slightly self-unconscious...
i might grow numd, or depressed.... Plus I never said I was right.
.Shoplifting : Shoplifting (Kill Rock Stars).
Organic power, angry rebellion... Shoplifting is a post punk
insurrection without concession. In this amazing feminist post punk
family of the Slits (they actually had a song called "Shoplifting"
and Idoubt this is a coincidence)-Huggy Bear-Erase Errata-King Cobra,
I would like the wild kids. Guitars are revolving around steady
bass-guitars with chainsaw inserts. The structures they use are
beyond chaos, in the best post-punk tradition. Did you ever expect
to find order in anger? so what did you expect?!?!? Who really wants
order anyway? This band is anadrenaline kick... the same one you
get out of shoplifting....

It's cold this morning? 'really don't want to get up? Put this one
in the machine and press play...Go! Go! Go! She's not sorry at all,
and I don't see why she should be! Shira is a pure injection of
electroshockHoPrawrock with politics and attitude, total respect!
