babes in boyland on the air
babes in boyland presents

Our first encounter with Motormark occured through Babes in Boyland (never underestimate the power of alternative networks!) some time last spring, with "(we hate) everybody in the discotheque." It took them half a track to get the total distorted keys junkies we are hooked, addicted and begging for more: the spirit, the energy, the passion, the collaboration with the Radical Cheerleaders Manchester. Everything was like in dreams we didn't dare to have! Between two of our casio fix, they aggreed to answer a few questions, although they were busy with the preparation of their second album (Chrome Tape), and continuous touring.... Here is what came out of it: introducing Motormark by ... Motormark themselves, enjoy the trip!

BiB/Oa: Would you please introduce the band ?
Motormark: JANE MOTORO + MARKO POLOROID

BiB/Oa: How did you come up with the name Motormark ? Were you trying to compete with the "professional dealer in used cars"? ;-)
Motormark: That car dealer! is that the DIE MOTORMARK one ?? that always scares me on a google search, Die Motormark comes up, very frightening. The name was really 2 things that happened at once - We saw a giant shop sign in Casablanca that was written in Arabic but looked like it said MOTORMARK, we really loved the sign and imagined it was our bands name in lights! at the time we were thinking about giving ourselves more showbiz names, it just happened, Jane Motoro, Marko Poloroid. we wanted to sound like a tacky cabaret act, you know the sort of thing, the 2 names combined, very Las Vegas lounge band, not one on the main strip, one further away, maybe just outside the city, a bit stinky and a bit creepy..LIVE TONITE - MOTORMARK.

BiB/Oa: How you decided to play together ?
Motormark: We met at High School i think we were like 12 or 13. We met cause we were the bad kids. Marko played guitar in band and I was just a wierd girl that could play a bit of Viola and sing so i was in. I think at our largest we had maybe 7 members but they all eventualy left. It was pretty noisey stuff! We both joined other bands from time to time but we knew we always wanted to do this one, we always had the idea for a duo.

BiB/Oa: What are your musical backgrounds ?
Motormark: Guess we just liked alternative music and being in bands, both our parents had bands, its all weve ever known! I took lessons to play the viola which really helped a lot when i started to play bass. After High School I went to 'Rock School' and learned about singing! really! Marko has always just picked things up and made a noise, he only started singing like 2 years ago- bless him!

Bib/Oa: How you defined the band's profile ?
Motormark: I dont know! it just happened. We did start working with samplers and we really wanted to do that, old punk 7"s mixed with new machines, but it wasn't the sort of band we wanted to be onstage,Ii guess playing live helped us refine the final motormark sound, knowing what we could and couldn't do, switching things on and off wouldn't be very cool, we really wanted to play live.

BiB/OA: What motivated your choice of instruments ?
Motormark:
Being just 2 of us we have to play everything and anything! if we want to hear a bass part then we have to just pick up a bass and play it, if we want a synth we have to just work out how to play one! although we use machines, we never want to sound like more than 2 of us playing at any one time, that would be like lies! we always just have the drum machine plus 2 instruments and play all we can live. we could have a huge layered sound, 100s of things recorded, but it wouldnt seem right, we only do what we physically can.

BiB/Oa: Any memories of your first rehearsal ?
Motormark: I think our first rehearsal Marko cut my hair! In the 1st days of Motormark we just listened to Cds and made costumes, thats what was important to us.
