babes in boyland presents

Babes in Boyland : Why did you move out of San Francisco? Was it linked to Bush's re-election?
Jessie: I had a very strong impulse to get out of the US, knowing that Bush would be re-elected and not wanting to comprimise what I was doing to live there any longer...honestly I am very ignorant of what is going on in politics in the moment. It is very apathetic there too. Although we lived in San Francisco which is very liberal and political but still, it is a very thick level of unconsciousness and not wanting to think about what will happen next. People don't want to talk about the future or war. But I think it will not be a pretty picture to be living there. Because of what the government is doing at the moment, and things are getting very conservative for women, abortion becoming illegal etc etc etc etc..

Babes in Boyland :
What's your new life like in Berlin? Was there the same inspiration in San Francisco ?
Jessie: So far it is very cold and a lot of snow! but we like it very much. We've made friends with some amazing people and feel very challenged and inspired by the new music around us. Our label Fatal Recordings is out of Berlin and we are so happy to be part of this, and to work with Hanin Elias, whose voice and music I admire and think is very original.

Babes in Boyland : You made a record cover for the Sixteens' album"Casio", how did you meet? Since another of their cover has been designed by Genesis P Orridge, is there a kind of "gloomy" musicians community? I mean not part of the usual rock stream
Jessie:
Actually . I only took the photos for the cover of the sixteens record.. Vouve from Sixteens made the collage. Sixteens are very close friends of ours.. as far as genesis goes, i think he is really a very positive and uplifting person too! what appears "gloomy " is just honesty. When people are too happy it can be fake.. I'd rather see the ugly side first. At the moment we are in the process of bridging communities together from the underground. It becomes really boring for everyone to be in their own self-absorbed worlds

Babes in Boyland : It seems like your public is quite gothic, is it something you're looking for ? How would you define your last release, batcave? deathrock?
Jessie:
We are not looking for anything other than to express what is inside of us the best we can at that moment...I would say the last album was dark electro and experimental ..but its really boring to me that people always want to talk about the "style " of music, reducing it to fashion .it really has nothing to do with where were coming from or what were talking about.. .I do believe very strongly in the music I like, and coming from a new wave background I feel connected to it and its in my blood to make this kind of music, being American, I relate more to music as my background than any nationality... but this is something that goes much deeper to me than an outward sound or appearance.. its in the emotion that the music carries..

Babes in Boyland : Do you find it easy to play as a female musician/singer? Any good shows or difficult ones that you could tell us about? Have you noticed any differences between Europe and the States with the audience? If yes what are they?
Jessie:
Yes I find it easy. I think now is the best time to be a female in music. It is hard for me to place my finger on a difference between the crowds in Europe and the US. Both are such immense huge places with so many different subcultures. There is a lot going on that is very different everywhere we go, from city to city the people could behave like wild apes at one place and deaf mute statues at the next. A big difference between the US and Europe is that there is a lot more respect for art and music here in Europe...It is possible to survive from doing music, which is something that is not so easy in the US.

Babes in Boyland:
Anything else you would want to say or talk about?
Jessie:
Yes, we are looking for sponsors!
