Ella Bandita vs OvaryAction
radioshow, at RadiOrakel 99,3 fm in Oslo, October 1st 2005.
You show us yours - we’ll show you ours
Elle Bandita is playing The Game, up in Blitz's attic. It was the day after her first Oslo gig, so in case you want to hear good old hungover radio råwk, read this:
OA: Could you first tell us who you are and how did you come up with this Elle Bandita name?
EB: I came up with this Elle Bandita name because a guy organized a Halloween party a year ago. And he wanted a show or someone to play. It was in his living room and it was so great! So I said "Okay, I’m going to write some songs and put together a show". So I wrote five - six songs, and everybody went wild on it. So that was cool! But then my name was pop…-what was it again-…yeah, Pop-side-down. So, after that I wanted to find a band name that sounds good, so I found Elle Bandita which means "she", "the band" or "the she-bandit". And I think it kind of suits me.
OA: Was it really important for you to have this gender mark as well?
EB: Yeah, of course. Because not a lot of girls are actually making music or get accepted in the whole male testosterone music scene. So, yeah, I gotta do the Elle part.
OA: You’ve had quite an experience playing with other bands as well?
EB: Yeah! Don’t go there, please! (laughters)
BOA: Let’s dig into the dirty secrets!
EB: Well, not dirty….just some orgies…
OA: : But you also play with The Riplets, and that is not a dirty secret.
EB: No, and yeah, I do play with them, but it is a dirty band! …and dirty guitars.
OA: You had a show last night, have you recovered?
EB: Well, no. I think I have to start to drink again now…to kill the hangover…
OA: But you are playing again tomorrow.
EB: Yes, at Paragrafen. You know that!
OA: Yeah, and it will start at 9.30 since it is a Sunday. But are you going to play the same set as at Spasibar?
EB: Yeah, I think so, but I hope the microphone will stay in the same place this time, cus yesterday I had some trouble…
OA: But the crow really like it, was it fun?
EB: Yes, it was alright, cus there was some Russian guys who was pretty annoying. They said they wanted some "spectacular" - "Give us some more spectacular…" and so I just….you know - go to another bar if you don’t like my music. Get your own band in Moscow or wherever you are from.
OA: Well, it was a really great concert. And all your song, you wrote within a year?
EB: Yeah, I did.
OA: How do you usually work? Do you mess around with sound, or do you come up with lyrics and ideas first…?
EB: I’m not that good with lyrics. I use a Roland TR 707 drum computer, and sometimes I start with that and I make some beats or whatever…or sometimes it’s the other way around when I first play some guitar, and if I get stuck I always try with another instrument. New ideas, some fresh inspiration. That is why the songs are pretty different from each other. One is more hip-hop-ish or something and the others are more punk-ass and rock’n’roll-sleaze-prrrffhhh.
OA: But you are a guitar player to start with?
EB: Yeah, in nature, yes! I was born with a flying V. My mother screamed!!
OA: Was it tuned….?
EB: No! But that’s rock’n’roll!
OA: : So you started playing with beats just because you couldn’t find a band, or did you want a solo project as well?
EB: I wanted to earn money and own the copyrights to every song!
- music break with The Butchies, cus it was the first lesbian band Elle Bandita got to know, and she immediately bought their albums. It was in the period when "3" came out. And she like the voice of the singer, Kaia, which led her to the discovery of Team Dresch. Since she’s only 20, she missed out on the Riot-movement in the beginning when it was fresh and hot, and hip and cool! It’s still fresh and hot, though. The song she chose "Mandy".
