Oa/Bib : You've known him for a long time?
Client A : Not really, we met him on a Depeche Mode tour
because we supported them on some dates. We did the ones that Fad
Gadget couldn't do, in another band I was in called Technique. It
was only supposed to be 2 dates in Germany and then it ended up
being 15. Then Sara came to do some vocals (she was in Dubstar).
Oa/Bib : Can you present the new album?
Client B : It is a journey through Client, really, covering
everything from prostitution to addiction, to prosac, to one-night
stands, to the disintegration of a love affair...
Oa/Bib : Do you write all the tracks together?
Client A : Yes, most of the songs are co-written. I write
on a keyboard, it's a G4, I use analogic. I have a little studio
at home, so everything is really homemade. I have been to thousands
of different labels since I started playing music, from Virgin to
everybody else, every different band, a different label. You know,
you get a deal, you get money, you go to a big studio, make a video,
the record is out, then if it doesn't happened, you're dropped.
I am sick of it. We want to do it really like ourselves. Keep it
more like a cottage industry, much more organic, and to remain in
control.
Client B : and stay away from the music industry. This industry
is not about music, strangely enough. Music is the last thing they
are concerned about. They sell it like washing powder.
Oa/Bib : The thing is that staying on the alternative side
also means you probably do not live of your music.
Client A : That's why Andy encourages us to see the different
facets of music, DJing, or making remixes. We made a remix for Nordic
records, for example. We did some for Erasure, but it was a bit
hardcore for them (laughs). In music now, you can't really sustain
yourself just by record sales, you have to have other things, you
have to be like a company. Look at different aspects, and stay as
much in control as you can... and never go into music to make money.
it has to be in your blood.
