OA: What did you record it on?
RTTS: I've got this 4-track. It's not a standard 4-track, it's a zoom box. It is a Japanese sort of a…..it's digital and it is not on a computer, so it looks like….more like a MP3 player. Very small, although I have a slightly bigger version of it now. And it's got 4 tracks and that's it. It got a few effects that I like. And I just press record and then I press record again and that's it. Yeah. But I did this studio thing. I thought about it for a long time but it would be strange to do demos when their not demos anymore. So I thought I might as well work with some other people - so I did. And I'm happy I did.
OA: So who are these people and how did you chose them?
RTTS: I chose to work with friends. That knows my music well and really like the demo quality. And so they let me do pretty much the same thing, we just have some more instruments. Because I love the 80'ties and I love synthesizers. And I got to use some of the sounds that I didn't have in front of me when I recorded at home. So I have done pretty much the same thing that I did at home, except that a few people came and helped me out, they played bass and drums, and those instruments that would have taken me forever to play. It has mostly to do with time. I think it was a good choice.
OA: Do you feel you songs are changed beyond the quality.or anything? It is different when other people play with you, isn't it?
RTTS: Yeah, but that is not all of the songs, though. This next song, it is just me. The only other contributors are people clapping. Cus we needed a lot of people at the same time to make it sound a bit bigger. So about half the songs are still just me playing things I love. But I'm a bit of a control freak so I...Anyway this is the new version.
We listen to "A cute love song please".
OA: This sound like very fun song to do. And it's not going to be a single??
RTTS: It was really fun and no, I don't think the radio will play it. Except for here on RadiOrakel. I actually think it won't be played because of the lyrics. Like never! But I will like it to be. I like it! And I like to do more of this. And I have, but it is not recorded yet. It will come.
OA: When you play live, are you thinking of playing with a full band?
RTTS: Yeah, I'm thinking of it. I'm playing with a couple of friends at the moment so we have started to do more things. It's a bit more electronic live, different. Cus we don't have drums and that stuff so we just use computers. And that's fun. But I also really like playing on my own. To have the focus..not just because I like to have the focus.but because I sometimes think it is necessary for people to concentrate on one thing. You know you need to concentrate more when..yeah if it is just one person doing something slightly odd, you get people to listen to the lyrics, and they don't just watch what cords people are playing. "yeah, he's doing that, and ooh he's doing that." You demand a bit of attention. Which I like doing, cus I think people need to listen to lyrics when they are like this.
OA: So it's going to be a Rocket party. Is it the release party?
RTTS: Yes, it is going to be a Rocket party. However, we just been told we need to move it to a different spot. So if anyone knows of a venue or a gallery, just let me know! It's beyond anyone control. But if you want to come, email on trustmerecords@hotmail.com so that we can put you on the list. And I'd love people to come! Or you can sign up on underskog.no. And we are trying to hold on to the originally date, the 29th of September. So if anyone has a backyard or a venue or a gallery, please email me at jenny.hval@gmail.com.
OA: We are going to listen to a special artist that you have chosen today, Diamanda Galas, may you explain your choice? And how important she was to you?
RTTS: I grew up listening to her. My dad played this album that the song is from, for me when I was quite young. And I was so scared. It was just really freaky. But I really liked it. So I have kind of always been listening to her.
OA: So was it the first thing you played on your keyboard?
RTTS: Yes, and no. No, it was a bit after that. I was a bit older. But pretty early on. So she has inspired me a lot. I don't know if you can hear it on this album very much but in other things she does, she really has inspired me a lot. She's doing quite extreme voice work, but she is a very.she is just very inspiring. And I have read a lot about her as well. She is very clever. Very extreme. These muses are necessary.
OA: There was a very good interview with her in the ReSearch, Angry Women.
RTTS: Yes, I read that one and I loved it!
Diamanda Galas: "You must be certain of the devil"
OA: Have you seen her perform live?
RTTS: No, I've never been anywhere where she has performed.
OA: Her performances are quite rare, and on the other side of the Atlantic?
RTTS: She actually performs a lot at the moment, and she was in Paris a week ago. But poor musicians can't travel just anywhere to see people play.
OA: We wish you luck on finding a new venue and hoping that a lot of people buy your record, "To sing you apple trees". How did you come up with that name?
RTTS: Well, it is in the lyrics of one of the songs we played earlier. On "Cherry tree song". I just wanted something that doesn't stop for a title. Like it is part of something, something that grows. And that's not cherries, cus that such a female cliché. I couldn't do cherries, I had to do apples instead. Because that is not a cliché??!! So I made it worse. Any way I like it.
