Rockettothesky ...is very Special guest on the OvaryAction RadioShow (Sept 16th, 2006) Rockettothesky is a band. It has two members: a dog and a girl. The dog is dead. The girl is alive.
OvaryAction: Let's begin with the stricky identity question: , who are you and how did you start playing music?
Rockettothesky: I'm rockettothesky.well, that is the short version. And the long version will be that I started playing the clarinet when I was eight. And before that I had a keyboard which I still have and use a lot. I got it when I was six and I thought myself how to play it. I started to play in bands when I was seventeen, in a goth band, so I've got lots of influences from there.
OA: And what were you playing in the goth band?
RTTS: I was singing then. But I didn't like to be a singer cus I've always been very conscious about what happens when you're a girl and singing..just singing. Although I did compose melody and stuff. And after that I went to Australia to study..
OA: ..and it was to hot to be a goth.?
RTTS: .well actually Brisbane which is one of the hottest places you can go to in Australia, has all these Goths in the city centre. And they are just wearing big cloaks and full make up and everything..in summer. It's crazy! And I didn't believe it, but I went there and it was true. It was a lot of Goths.
OA: So were you drawn there by the Goth scene?
RTTS: No, I lived in Melbourne. I played in bands there as well, but I started to do my own music for myself and I did that on the side of other music projects for a long, long time and then I came back to Norway and I started to play on my own. That's what I'm doing now.
OA: Is it a choice or is it because you went tired of waiting for other people playing with you?
RTTS: No, it was probably because I couldn't do everything lyric-wise and have the sort of freedom to be spontaneous and the way that I am when I played with the people I used to play with. It was a pop band then, so I didn't feel all my lyrics would fit in although I tried. It feels so much better now. I can scream and hate on stage and it will be only me doing that.
OA: You are responsible for the whole thing?
RTTS: Yeah.
OA: Shall we play one track to get in the mood?
We play one of Rockettothesky's songs called "on cherry tree song" from her debut album "to sing your apple trees", being released on the 2nd of October 2006. And she explains that she's a bit of an academic, so the lyrics are pretty much from Oedipus. It's about Jocasta - his mother.
OA: So is your record all ready for the release?
RTTS: Yes, its all ready! It came back from the printers yesterday. Bur I haven't seen it yet, though.
OA: Is it on cd and vinyl or is it just on cd?
RTTS: Just cd.we need money to do the vinyl. I'd love to but..
OA: Is it your very first one?
RTTS: Yes, it is my first one, yes. I have released EPs and made some stuff, but it is my first official release of an album.
OA: Was it on the same record label, the other ones?
RTTS: No, that was with my bands in Australia.
OA: And can you tell us a bit about the record label you are on now?
RTTS: Yes, sure! It's called Trust Me Records and it's run by Marit Karlsen. She used to be a journalist on P3, back in the days. And she would play a lot of music I would record, ten years ago, on to my tapes. And I would listen to them over and over again. So she's responsible for taste in music.
OA: So you called her and said: "It's all your fault and I have this record now.
RTTS: "Yeah, you bitch, it's all you fault!" No, I didn't do that. It's just her, so it's a small label.
OA: It has a lot of great bands on it, like Monomen, Remington Super 60, Laptop, Casa Electro Novo, Beeswax, Safariari and Popface..
RTTS: Yes, it's a lot of different things.
OA: Is it a particular thought behind it or is it just love for music?
RTTS: I think she's done a variety of things she likes but I think she has narrowed it down to the stuff that she really wants to work with now. I think she has release a lot of things in the past and she' s only doing my album right now. I don't know that much about her in the beginning, due to that I was over seas.
OA: But you manage to get your distribution though Platecompaniet..
RTTS: Well, she's got distribution through Musikkopperatørene which means it 's going to be out in all the main record stores. Which is a bit crazy, cus I usually do everything myself. People can buy it now!
OA: But it is really good that an alternative label has such a good distribution.
RTTS: Yeah it is. It's important, because, in any way you look at it, people want to hear things. And it's a lot of thing people can't know about because they can't find it. So I thought it was a good idea to be on a label. At least at the moment. Cus I don't have as many contacts. You know some others, they just know everyone!
OA: Would you like to be signed on a bigger label?
RTTS: No. At the moment I just do my thing and I think a bigger label would interrupt that process. To an extent, for some reason. But I do not know what I will do in the future. I've done a lot of different musical things. Sometimes I just do music for theatre and sound scapes, and sometimes I do more performance stuff with monologues. And now I've done this album. So I don't think a bigger label would be interested in monologues and performance. It's not really P3.
The single " Barrie for Billy MacKenzie". Rockettothesky thinks it's a clumsy title for a single, it should be called "Love" or "Hate" or something like that. It was suppose to be called Billy MacKenzie" but then, she says: '.I usually improvise my lyrics and everything and then I just started to sing Barrie and thought: "I have to call it Barrie, then" But I didn't like the word and it is for Bill MacKenzie, who was the lead singer for the band The Associates, and the song is inspired of the Associates, hence the clumsy title'.
OA: This other song "A cute love song please" that you have on your myspace profile, is it recorded live?
RTTS: No, it is not. And the clapping is just me, and me, and me again. It's one of the first songs I recorded.
OA: But how did you record all these songs then? You didn't play all the instruments, did you?
RTTS: On the album I've been in a studio. That is mainly because I have already recorded all my songs, alone, just me, so that is done already. So I thought I would not need to do that again just to get a proper sound quality.
